Richard Mallinson from Sydenham near Thame put up a respectable showing in the BMW Kumho Championship in his E36 M3 car at Snetterton on Saturday, writes Derek john Binsted.
He had one qualifying session first thing Saturday morning followed by two races later in the day.

For qualifying Richard had a 15 minute session to put up his fastest time out of the 28 cars that were competing in the race.

The track was dry and the sun was trying to shine making for some good lap times.

At the end of the session Richard's fastest time was 1 minute 18.39 seconds which was good enough for 3rd place on the grid.

This time represented an average speed of nearly 90mph as the car then went back to the paddock to be fully checked over and prepared for the first race.

The first race for Richard was held late morning and even though the rain clouds were looming no rain had fallen on the track.

The race was contested over 11 laps of the circuit.

Richard made a good start and was safely through the tight first corner where a lot of drivers come unstuck.

He was soon up to full racing speed and was in the leading pack of cars.

As the race settled down the race leader was pulling away in his special invitational car but Richard was safely in the top half of the race.

The laps went by and the race took the chequered flag and Richard was in 9th place overall.

During the time between the 2 races it started to rain on the Norfolk circuit and by the time Richard's second race started there was a lot of standing water on the track and visibility was also an issue.

Another 11 laps were ahead for the Sydenham racer. He had another good clean start and kept out of trouble.

There was a huge amount of spray being thrown up and some parts of the circuit were like a wall of spray.

The race leader was pulling away but Richard was having a good race with the following pack of cars.

There were cars going off the track but Richard was driving a very sensible race and when he finished he had brought his car home in 5th place.

Richard is now lying in 7th place overall in the championship and 2nd in his class A for the more powerful cars.

The championship will now move onto the Croft circuit near Darlington at the end of August.
