Richard Mallinson from Sydenham was competing at Donington Park over the weekend, writes Derek John Binsted.
The racer competes in the Kumho Tyres BMW championship in his E36 M3 car which he has already won with this season.

Richard's qualifying session was held early on Saturday morning on a nice dry circuit.

There were 34 cars qualifying so a good time was needed to get as high up the grid as possible. Richard's fastest time was that of 1:20.149 which placed him on the grid in eighth position.

That qualifying time was at an average speed of nearly 88 mph. He came out to race late on Saturday afternoon and the race was over 14 laps.

A good clean start put Richard right up in the leading cars going around the first circuit.

The front pack was soon travelling very fast and within a few laps the leaders were already coming up behind the race's back markers.

Richard was having a tussle with Ian Crisp, but with clever driving not only managed to overtake the slower cars, but took the lead. As the race ended Richard had taken a well deserved victory. The car went back to the paddock to be race prepared for the following day.

Sunday's contest was over 13 laps and was also held in glorious sunshine. Richard took pole position after winning the race on Saturday. Once again he made a good start and was in the lead being chased by a huge pack of BMWs.

His closest challenger was Crisp and at one point Richard actually lost the lead to him, but clawed it back again not only to win the race, but to complete a clean sweep of the Kumho BMW races at the circuit. Richard will now head off to Brands Hatch in Kent in a couple of weeks full of confidence not only in the car but with his driving as he hardly put a foot wrong all weekend.
