(MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20) CHINNOR pressed the self-destruct button once again as they threw away points unnecessarily at home to Rosslyn Park last Saturday.
This was summed up just a minute into the game when, electing to play against the wind, Chinnor fielded the Rosslyn Park kick-off deep in their 22 in an attempt to run the ball out.
But they failed to keep the ball in hand and spilled it, allowing P
ark left winger Niall Lear to go over in the corner. A touchline conversion from Richard Anthony rubbed salt into this early wound.
The same player hit a penalty three minutes later before full back Richard Jackson went over under the posts on eight minutes to leave the hosts 17 points adrift and a huge struggle to get back in the game. But to their credit they did just that, when Beets charged down an attempted clearance by Anthony and scored near the touchline.
A period of intense pressure from Chinnor followed but poor decision making cost them dear. Failing to retain the ball beneath the posts gave Park the opportunity to clear and within seconds Chinnor were standing behind their own posts awaiting the inevitable successful conversion instead of standing on the half-way awaiting their own.
This was one of the pivotal moments in the game as instead of being just five points behind with the wind in their favour and the entire second half to come, Chinnor were suddenly 19 points behind with it all to do again. Another penalty from the boot of Anthony gave Park even more breathing space but again Chinnor came back with a Williams converted try from Winpenny.
A penalty by Williams five minutes into the second half gave the Chinnor faithful a boost but was followed by the most critical moment of the game. The referee, having awarded Chinnor a penalty some 10m from their line, reversed his decision following some backchat.
This appeared somewhat bizarre as the home side had been given the penalty in their favour. Park then duly kicked the ball in the corner and from the resulting line-out the inevitable rolling maul brought about another try.
This was indeed the killer blow for a now demoralised Chinnor who conceded two more tries as the scoreline began to somewhat flatter the visitors. Chinnor also conceded four yellow cards for technical infringements with the penalty count also ending in Park's favour.
Result: Chinnor 15 Rosslyn Park 44
