Thame? There's an app for that

Thame's iPhone application, iThame, has officially gone live and is now available to download for free.

And it is a world first for Thame as it becomes the first town on the planet with an iphone application dedicated to its community.

iThame is downloadable on the popular iPhone and will offer useful information for visitors and residents. Local amenities, heritage and historical walks, sports, accommodation, travel, news (RSS feeds), business, local events, music and information will all be accessible via the free download.

Co-creator Andy McDonald of MDB Consulting, also responsible for the Thame's bridal store application iBridal, said: "The application demonstrates how the town has embraced the new age of consumer demand for information on the move through an entrepreneurial spirit not seen anywhere else in the country.

"Downloadable by anyone, anywhere in the world free of charge we expect a big interest in Thame's appeal to non-residents who may until now have been unaware of what Thame has to offer. We are hoping it will evolve based on user feedback, which is a feature of the application.

"Users can suggest what should be in or out of the application through the mobile device, but usage will also be closely monitored through the administration system that advises on which content is popular."

The app is funded by local businesses such as Thame Service Station, Newitts Butchers, Racquets Fitness Centre, Brothers Hair Salon, the Thatch pub and restaurant and Kismet Jewellers. MDB Consulting built the free application using a unique mobile content management system and is to be supplied with information and news from the town.

Jeannette Matelot Green, Thame mayor, said: "This initiative is the first of its kind and I am proud to represent a town that has pulled together such a unique initiative. I am sure it will be followed by most other towns in the UK, and possibly worldwide, that want to increase spend within their communities."

Sonja Francis who runs Thame information website said: "When Andy and Simon approached me about providing content, I was absolutely delighted to be involved in such an innovative and exciting project for the town.

"Although the website has lots of relevant information, to have immediate access to it on the move from your phone, as well as news feeds makes it so much more useful.

"Undoubtedly the application will help us shout about what Thame has to offer as a great town visitor destination and also to conduct business in."

With the application also being made available to the new Google phone, which is predicted to rival the success of the iPhone, the creators have their fingers crossed that more businesses will want get involved as the usage of the application widens.
