A runaway prisoner has been jailed for nine years after going on a crime spree which included assaulting a police officer.

Lee Martin, 33 absconded from HMP Springhill, in Grendon Underwood, on January 29 and committed a number of offences in Milton Keynes in just a few hours.

Eventually a police helicopter and ‘heavy presence’ on the ground captured him at 7pm in Meadow Park, Stoke Mandeville.

Martin pleaded guilty to making off without payment and dangerous driving, was found guilty by a jury of robbery and assault of a police constable and was found not guilty of burglary.

He was sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court to nine years for robbery, three months for making off without payment, six months for dangerous driving and six months for assaulting a police constable, to run concurrently.
