Cycling more than 1,000 miles might not seem the most relaxing way to spend a 65th birthday, but it is what Rod Alexander has his heart set on.

After surviving a bout of cancer but losing a friend to the disease, Mr Alexander is aiming to raise more than £5,000 for Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres by cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

The father of four leaves Cornwall on Tuesday (August 28) and hopes to reach the tip of Scotland by September 8.

Mr Alexander said he chose Maggie’s because he and his wife found them ‘very supportive and helpful’ during his illness.
