Aylesbury faces years of misery on some of its busiest roads after the full extent of work required to build HS2 was revealed this week, by Bucks Herald reporter Andrew Kay.

From 2017 50-strong construction crews could spend 18 months working around the clock on the A41 Bicester Road, A418 Oxford Road and A4010 Risborough Road building the controversial 22 metre-wide train line.

And up to 150 workers could be based near Wendover for five years building a tunnel and viaduct, with the site acting as a giant admin hub to oversee all the other work taking place.

There are fears that huge caravan campsites could spring up to house all the workers, which happened when HS1 was built in Kent.

Bucks County Council has drawn up a construction code of conduct which it is demanding workmen follow to mitigate the effects of the work.

It calls for a procedure to be set to resolve working hour concerns and for more details about how the sites will be made secure – claiming the equipment could become ‘a magnet for organised crime’.

It also suggests that webcams are installed so the public can check on the work and an agreement is made beforehand about how dust will be managed.

The suggested code also states that sharing ‘accountability between HS2 Ltd and its contractors’ is not acceptable and HS2 Ltd must be ‘ultimately responsible’.

Anti-HS2 campaigner Vincent Nolan said construction would cause ‘chaos’ in the Vale.

“People have got no idea what to expect, a lot of people seem to think it is just another railway, but it’s massively

different.

“The scale will be something we have never experienced anything like before.”

Mr Nolan lives in Marsh Lane, Stoke Mandeville, where 50 workmen will spend two-and-half-years building a bridge.

He said: “It’s a narrow country lane and there is already a notice saying the road isn’t wide enough for two vehicles. The whole thing is crazy.”

Aylesbury MP David Lidington, who obtained the figures, said HS2 Ltd needs to be ‘willing to alter these initial plans in response to local views’ to mitigate its impact.

A spokesman for HS2 Ltd said the information given was work in progress.

It includes potential construction sites and power supply locations as well as assessments of access road requirements, road diversions and measures to obtain public rights of way.
