Councillor Michael Rand, who has been vice chairman for two years, was voted into the position at a meeting last night (Wednesday).
He replaces fellow Conservative councillor Derrick Isham.
Mr Rand said: “I’m very pleased and honoured to be here.
“Thank you very much for electing me to office.”
The chairman, a non-political figure, is a ceremonial post, representing the authority at various events and chairing full council meetings.
Councillor Jenny Bloom was elected as the new vice-chairman.
