More than £8,500 is being handed out to reward 35 high flying young people across South Oxfordshire.

Each of the young people, who are aged between 11 and 18, will receive up to £250 in recognition of their talents in sports, the arts or citizenship, which awards people who have made a significant contribution to their local community.

Four of the Young Achievers Awards scheme winners are from Thame.

Councillor Bill Service, cabinet member for grants at South Oxfordshire District Council, which runs the awards, said: “It’s a priority for the council to improve opportunities for young people and providing a bit of money will help talented young people continue to grow in their chosen activities.

“We have some incredible young people in the district and I’m proud of their many achievements.”

To qualify in the sports category applicants must have been competing at county level standard in the sport, while in the arts category there must be a high level of commitment and skill in the chosen art form, which can be anything from music to photography.

Eleven of the recipients are winning the award for the second time, having made a considerable improvement in their category to earn another award.

The awards scheme is now in its fourth year and this year’s tally of 35 winners takes the overall number of recipients to 171 over the years.

An awards ceremony to celebrate the winners’ achievements will take place on March 8 at Benson Village Hall.

The council chairman, Councillor Janet Carr, and vice-chairman, Councillor Dorothy Brown, will present the awards.
