The 40th anniversary of the first publication of classic novel Watership Down is being celebrated by a Thame bookshop.

To mark the occasion this month, Oxfam books in Cornmarket is mounting a wall display to encourage people to pick up a copy of Richard Adams’ terrific tale.

The story has featured as a film, TV series and was a chart hit for Art Garfunkel as a solo artist with ‘Bright Eyes’.

The classic children’s book has never been out of print since it was first published in November 1972.

Initially rejected by many publishers, Rex Collings Ltd agreed to the first publication before Penguin Books later took it on, with the novel becoming a bestseller and one the BBC’s top 100 books.

The story follows the adventures of a small group of rabbits in south east England as they seek a new home and have to overcome various perils and temptations along the way.
