There must be something in the water! With a combined innings of 188, Wendover’s Dolly and Nora prove age no barrier to working

With a combined age of 188, two women from the same village are proving that being advanced in years is no barrier to putting in a shift at work.

Dolly Saville is famously still working as a barmaid at The Red Lion in Wendover at the age of 98, while another equally impressive great grandmother, Nora Mullinder, is working in the same High Street at the age of 90.

It begs the question: Is there something in the water in Wendover?

Mrs Mullinder puts in a shift each week at the Florence Nightingale Hospice shop, which she helped to set up when she came to live in Wendover in 1980 with her late husband Major Cliff Mullinder.

“I don’t know about something in the water,” she smiled.

“I think it depends on your personality whether you want to go out working and doing things as you get older.

“Some people make no effort to help themselves, but that would drive me mad. If I can be independent I prefer to be.

“I just can’t sit around all day and do nothing. I try to walk to the village every day and collect my milk.

“As long as I can I will continue working at the shop.”

Mrs Mullinder, whose devoted family – her daughter, two grandsons and a great grandson – all live close to her, does a three-hour voluntary shift at the shop every week.

“I don’t work downstairs now, I work upstairs. I sort the clothes, check they are clean, put them into the right sizes, price them and put them on the rail. I enjoy doing it.”

Mrs Mullinder has always been very active, and enjoyed cycling with her husband for many years.

As an Army wife she lived in nine different countries during her husband’s career and was used to volunteering in military charity shops.
