The toys from years gone by come to Bucks
Dolls from various eras are just one of the attractions at the Toy Exhibition
Having got to grips with new Christmas gifts, youngsters have the chance to see the sort of toys their parents or grandparents might have played with as a child.
To celebrate the festive season, Bucks County Museum is holding a unique exhibition of classic toys ranging from a 1850s Noah’s Ark and a doll made using a lobster’s claw to famous names such as Sindy and Action Man.
As well as stirring nostalgia, there is plenty to entertain younger visitors less familiar with toys on display, including a Punch and Judy style glove puppet theatre, slinky races and a Brio train set.
It is not the first time the exhibition has been put on and the museum’s visitor services manager, David Erskine, says it always proves very popular.
Mr Erskine said: “It’s a lovely example of toys that will bring back memories for lots of adults, as well as the children enjoying seeing some of the things that their Mum and Dad used to play with.
“When you walk around you can overhear people saying ‘I remember playing with that’, which is nice.”
Other interesting toys on display include an animatronic music box and a Thunderbirds Tracy Island. Displays cover such themes as construction, transport and toys influenced by TV and film, with those on show coming from the museum’s own collection and loans from staff members.
Although toys have changed hugely over the years, with iPads replacing Lego, Mr Erskine says the same trends often come round time and again.
He said: “It’s nostalgic, but the same toys come around in popularity as well. There are certain things that never go out of fashion, they’re just made out of different materials.”
The free exhibition began on December 15 and runs until January 12. It is open from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday, in Church Street, Aylesbury.
