The amazing couple, who are cheery, chatty and active, live in Beaconsfield Road, and will receive a congratulatory telegram from the Queen today, just like they did when they celebrated their 60th and 65th anniversaries.

Eddie and Connie King still do their own cooking, cleaning, laundry and look after the garden. Mr King, 95, still drives and has a Facebook page which he uses to keep in touch with the family.

When asked for the secret of their happy marriage Mr King, a former grammar school pupil, said: “The most essential thing is love and a sense of humour.”

And his wife, who is 90, added: “Just being together is the main thing.”

Mr King was born in Aylesbury when it was a small market town. His wife was born to English parents in America and they returned to England when she was 12, travelling by sea for five days.

The couple met when Mrs King was 14 and started dating properly a few years later. They married during the war when she was a nurse and he was a pilot and had a week’s honeymoon in Tunbridge Wells.

Mr King worked for 49 years with the Aylesbury Brewery Company and was a director when he retired.

The couple have one daughter, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

They will celebrate their platinum anniversary with a party for family and friends.
