Work to build a new £2 million marina in the east of Aylesbury has started.

The new canal basin and private clubhouse at Circus Field, off Oakfield Road, will eventually also feature 70 new homes.

The clubhouse will be used by Aylesbury Canal Society because its current base off Walton Street will be demolished to make way for the Waterside development, which features a Waitrose and Travelodge.

Currently around 30 boats per week use the Aylesbury arm of the Grand Union Canal, coming from Marsworth Junction.

The new marina will provide space for 40 moorings, including wet and dry docks.

It is expected to encourage more boats to come to the town.

Approval was granted back in 2010 for the new canal basin and private clubhouse.

Speaking last month, canal society chairman Bryan Barnes said: “The Circus Field basin will provide the Aylesbury Canal Society with some of the best inland waterway moorings in the country and we expect to attract more members and boats.

“The society here in Aylesbury has long been recognised as one of the most welcoming places for visiting boaters and we intend to continue this tradition with up to two weeks free secure moorings for visiting boats at Circus Field.”

The Aylesbury Canal Society was formed in 1971 to safeguard the town’s arm of the Grand Union Canal, following fears it could become under used and then neglected.

The Walton Street base has 35 moorings.

Discussions for the scheme have been ongoing for a number of years between Aylesbury Vale District Council and the canal society.

When asked about the financing of the project, a spokesman for the council said it will cost £2 million with the investment coming partly from AVDC, Aylesbury Vale Advantage and government money.

The spokesman added ‘we are not able to disclose how much the canal society has paid towards the project as this is currently commercially sensitive information’.

A spokesman for the canal society declined to reveal how much it is paying towards the new facility.
