Friars Square to review its security after rooftop drama
Friars Square shopping centre will review its safety measures after a girl climbed onto a car park rooftop before being talked down by security guards.
The teenager was captured in the picture opposite teetering on the edge of the Friars Square car park towards Aylesbury train station.
And shopping centre manager Andy Margieson said: “It’s the first time I’ve ever experienced anything like this.
“It was one of those horrible aspects of things. She managed to scale her way up there.
“She was determined to get on to an area she should not go on to.”
Friars Square security and Thames Valley PCSOs eventually managed to talk the girl down from the roof on Tuesday afternoon.
Mr Margieson said although the shopping centre’s security is vigilant there would now be a review of its measures.
He added: “We have got to be vigilant for all scenarios. We have now got to look at it for the future.
“As soon as someone breaks protocol we have to do something then.
Mr Margieson said one option being considered was installing a sign at the top of the car park with a telephone number for the Samaritans similar to the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.
“That’s one idea that came up from the police.
“A simple sign on the wall that would maybe alter someone’s thought process should they consider going that far.”
Thames Valley Police were called to the situation shortly after 3.03pm but were not required while welfare officers also attended.
Several tweets were posted regarding the incident. One user, who posted the above photo, wrote: “Tense moment...”
They later tweeted, “thank god” after the girl was safe.
