Florries scootathlon set to return at Stoke Mandeville Stadium
A mini fun triathlon for young sports enthusiasts will return in the spring after a year’s break.
Children can scoot, cycle and run on the Stoke Mandeville outdoor running track and raise money at the same time to help children with life limiting illnesses.
Florrie’s Scootathlon was a great success in 2011, but couldn’t happen last year due to the stadium being used by ahtletes in training for the Paralympics.
But the mini sporting event will be back with a flourish this year from 10am until 3pm on Bank Holiday Monday May 6.
Florence Nightingale Hospice events manager Karen Shardlow said: “We are inviting children to bring their scooters and bikes down to the stadium to scoot, cycle and run around the track.”
Children aged from four to eight-years-old can take part in the Scootathlon, with older children aged nine to 11-years-old invited to run and cycle in a Duathlon.
The event is being held specifically in aid of Florries.
Staff from the unit go to the homes of children with life limiting illnesses and support the whole family including the child, their siblings and parents.
Along with individual entries, the organisers are hoping to encourage schools to put forward children for the event, and are offering a prize of a craft garden or kitchen pack to use on the school premsies.
Mrs Shardlow said: “This promises to be a lovely day for a very worthwhile cause and we hope families will get behind us and enjoy a fantastic event.”
