Extent of Savile’s sex abuse revealed in report, including 22 offences at Stoke Mandeville Hospital
A new report has revealed the scale of sexual abuse carried out by Jimmy Savile in various hospitals including Stoke Mandeville.
The report, issued by the Metropolitan Police and the NSPCC, showed that the late DJ abused victims as young as eight. They include 28 children under the age of 10. Of these victims, 10 were boys.
Savile’s years of abuse spanned more than five decades, with 22 offences reported over 23 years at Stoke Mandeville. Over the years he is said to have offended at 13 hospitals, including Great Ormond Street. Of all his victims, 73% were children and 27% adults.
The report says there were 214 crimes recorded across 28 police force areas, which include 34 of rape and/or penetration.
A review by the Crown Prosecution Service says Savile could have been prosecuted while he was alive over three allegations of sexual offences if the police and prosecutors had taken a different approach. Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer QC apologised for the shortcomings of the CPS in these cases. The CPS review looked into four cases, three of which were reported to Surrey Police and one to Sussex Police.
The police and NSPCC report says there is no evidence Savile was part of a paedophile ring, but an investigation is ongoing as to whether he was part of an informal network.
Commander Peter Spindler, head of the MPS Specialist Crime Investigations, said of the report: “It paints a stark picture emphasising the tragic consequences of when vulnerability and power collide.
“Savile’s offending footprint was vast, predatory and opportunistic. He cannot face justice today but we hope this report gives some comfort to his hundreds of victims, they have been listened to and taken seriously. We must use the learning from these shocking events to prevent other children and vulnerable adults being abused in the future. They will get a voice.”
Peter Watt, NSPCC director of child protection advice and awareness, who co-wrote the report, said the scale of Savile’s abuse ‘simply beggared belief’.
Since the ITV documentary ‘Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile’ aired in October it has become known he was allowed to freely roam a number of hospitals, including Stoke Mandeville where he had his own flat on site.
However, the DJ was widely revered at Stoke Mandeville for his charitable work, which included helping raising more than £40 million for the National Spinal Injuries Centre.
