Cuts threaten future of community pool

John Colet School could lose the swimming pool

John Colet School could lose the swimming pool

A community swimming pool could be closed unless new funding is found.

A £17,000 county council grant for running the John Colet School pool is being withdrawn.

The situation is made worse by the fact that the pool is closed because the boilers are broken. The cost of making the pool usable again is £20,000 and anticipated repairs over the next five years are estimated at £90,000, in addition to running costs of £40,000 a year.

The school governors and the Wendover Swimming Association have agreed that even if money can be raised to make repairs this year, doing so would be a waste of the school’s and the members’ money if the level of running costs and repairs mean the pool cannot be kept open beyond 2013.

The association said it would be an ‘enormous pity’ if the pool can not reopen.

The governors said: “Swimming is not a compulsory activity on the secondary curriculum. Therefore we have to think very carefully about any actions that could be detrimental to the rest of the school.”

A decision on the pool’s future is expected to be announced in May.
