Council looks to clamp down on Aylesbury’s chewing gum menace

Chewing gum and cigarette butt bins are to be installed around Aylesbury later this year to clamp down on littering.
The move is part of a new street cleansing and horticultural services contract agreed by Aylesbury Vale District Council.
The council spends around £1.4 million annually cleaning up streets and open spaces and last year some £7,000 was spent removing chewing gum from pavements in Aylesbury town centre.
However, the expense has not prevented some areas of the town being blighted by chewing gum dropped by people and district and town councillor Barbara Russel thinks it is a scar on Aylesbury.
She said: “It looks ugly. If you visit a clean place it’s quite stark, the difference between that town and ours.
“We are trying to get people to come to Aylesbury and if they come and see a scruffy place will they want to return? I don’t think they will.”
In addition to the bins, Mrs Russel would like to see more patrols with the power to fine people who drop gum.
She also believes people who leave gum on the street have ‘no respect’ for Aylesbury and need educating.
