Aylesbury-based council may shed 147 further roles

Almost 150 posts could be cut at Bucks County Council between now and June, it has been revealed.

The authority, which has already made £68 million of savings in the past three years, is looking to make further cuts as it prepares to set its new budget next month.

It is understood that ‘back office’ roles such as those in HR, finance, IT, business support, property and legal services, are most at risk.

Staff numbers have already been slashed at the council, which in September 2009 employed 4,150 non-school workers but by September 2012 had reduced that figure to 3,231.

A spokesman for the authority said: “At present we have declared that up to 147 posts may be lost between January and June 2013.

“Not all these will result in redundancies as some are vacant and some covered by temporary staff.

“We have a strong track record of managing workforce reductions so that they have the minimum impact on employees.”

The Aylesbury-based council sends regular reports to the Department for Business Innovation and Skills on its projected redundancies.

The authority will set its final budget on February 14.

Speaking last week, council leader Martin Tett said ‘tough decisions’ had been taken to deliver a ‘common sense budget’.

He said: “These are certainly tough times for local government so this budget had to be realistic. We’ve had to find significant savings, principally in staffing and back office costs and we’ve also had to introduce new charges for services like home to school transport.

“Achieving a balanced budget was incredibly challenging but I believe its the best solution we could have reached given the situation we are in. “I’m also proud that we’ve delivered a £100 saving in council tax in these difficult times and I hope this will go at least someway to help residents cope with other rising household bills.”
