£2.75 million sports hub will benefit whole town

A superb sports facility is one step nearer for a secondary school and the town it serves.

Plans to build the £2.75 million facility at Princes Risborough School were put into action after Ofsted said there was currently a lack of space at the site to meet the needs of the national curriculum.

It will replace the old gym which was built in the 1960s when there was 400 pupils on the school roll. There are now 1,080 pupils at the school.

Following a public consultation in December, plans for the two-storey, five-court Community Sports Centre will be submitted this month, with an answer expected in April.

Deputy head teacher Owain Johns confirmed £1 million has already been raised through local authority funding.

He said: “Once planning permission is given it will give us much more confidence to go full steam ahead with additional fundraising.” This will come from a mixture of sports councils, lottery funding, grant making trusts, major donors and school fundraising.

If all goes according to plan, work should begin on the building in August, with a completion date of September 2014.

The new centre will be used by the community in the evenings, at weekends and during school holidays.

Mr Johns said: “We are happy about this. If we had sole use of it, it wouldn’t be used to its full potential.”
