A former Aylesbury High School girl has won a part as one of the lead characters in a production of the iconic RydellHigh School musical, Grease.
Charlotte Young has appeared in the Wycombe Swan Summer Youth Project productions for the past 10 years and this will be her final year as the shows are open only to actors aged from 10-19 years.
This year’s show opens on Friday August 8 and runs through to Sunday with four performances at the Wycombe Swan.
The show is based on the hugely popular film that starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton John as High School sweethearts who meet during the summer holidays and have to deal with the reality of school life when the T Birds and Pink Ladies discover their romance.
Iconic songs like Sandy, Greased Lightnin’ and Beauty School Dropout fill the film and the stage show.
Charlotte, 19, who lives in Whiteleaf, said: “I’m playing Frenchie the hairdresser with the pink hair. I’ve seen the film hundreds of times and Frenchie is the part I would have chosen. I was really happy when I heard I’d got the part.”
With 250 young people in the cast, the production staff have their hands full, but Charlotte says the productions are exceedingly professional.
She said: “We work with a professional board of directors and the director, musical director and choreographer are all professionals.
“The cast works very professionally, not childish at all. The principals put in a 12 hour day at rehearsals and the younger children do eight hours. Everyone loves performing, no one is messing about and we want it to look good.
“The audience will be made up of more than just our families, the general public will come too. We are motivated to keep up the theatre’s professional reputation.”
Charlotte is now at Leeds University studying business management with marketing, and admits to feeling sad that this will be her final Youth Project production.
She said: “I was torn between a career in the performing arts and something more academic. I eventually went with academic, but will always keep the performing arts as a hobby.”
Charlotte has previously appeared with the Youth Project in productions of Annie, My Fair Lady, West Side Story and Oliver.
Grease is on at 7pm on Friday and Saturday August 8 and 9 with an additional performance at 2.30pm on Saturday, and at 5.30pm on Sunday August 10. Tickets from £13 - £16.50.
