Location, location, location: Can you help place age-old photo of former Vale farmer

Do you know where Fred Alcock, pictured with his horse and cart above, was in this photo?

Do you know where Fred Alcock, pictured with his horse and cart above, was in this photo?

The grandson of a former Vale farmer is appealing for help from readers in placing a photograph taken over a century ago.

Colin Martin reached out to The Bucks Herald this week to see if anyone knows where this picture (above) of his grandfather Fred Alcock was taken.

Mr Alcock had a small holding around Wingrave in the early part of the 20th century.

According to Mr Martin, his grandfather used to sell produce around the area and believes the photo of him with his horse and cart dates back 109 years to 1905.

Mr Alcock’s family were all farm workers in the Wingrave area throughout the 19th Century and Fred was married at Wingrave Church.

Interestingly the picture was taken by Mr & Mrs SG Payne & Son Art Photographers Aylesbury which had branches in Thame and Tring (see picture inset, which was on the reverse of the main photo).

Mr Martin hopes someone will recognise the area.

“I would be very interested to find out if anyone can identify the location of the photograph,” he said.

“I have more information on Fred’s later years in the First World War and as a prisoner of war and up to 1926 when he died, if it is of interest to any readers.”
