Health minister Jeremy Hunt has praised Bucks Healthcare chief executive Anne Eden after the trust came out of special measures.

Mr Hunt made the comments in a Commons debate on patient safety after the MP for Thame John Howell, praised the way the Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust had come out of special measures.

The Trust was one of 11 hospital trusts placed in special measures last year, after 14 were investigated over high death rates.

Mr Howell said: “I join my hon. friend the member for Wycombe (Steve Baker) in praising the improvements that have taken place in Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, which has come out of special measures, and which affects part of my constituency.

“Are not those improvements a very good example of the way in which we are summoning up the political courage to tackle such trusts, particularly when they have experienced high death rates in the past?”

Mr Hunt said: “I hope that they are. I think that in the end we shall be judged on how successful we are in turning around hospitals in special measures.

“Last week I met Anne Eden, the chief executive of Buckinghamshire Healthcare. I think she has done an excellent job in extremely difficult circumstances, but I know she would agree that there is still much work to be done. “Taking hospitals out of special measures is the first step, but ultimately we must reassure the public that when there are problems, we shall be on their side and try to sort those problems out.”

Speaking following the news Anne Eden said: “This marks a really important step in our quality improvement journey.

“This has been a challenging year for us, but we have taken our responsibilities very seriously and I have been heartened by how tirelessly staff have worked to improve standards to ensure our patients are offered the safe and compassionate care we strive for.

“I am pleased that the inspection team recognised these improvements and the positive difference it has made to our staff and patients.

She added: “In particular, I am delighted that they made special mention of how caring our staff are, as this is

fundamental to a good patient experience.”
