A family garage business devastated by a fire is celebrating after reopening a year since the blaze.
GS Motors – run by father and son Pep and Sanjay Sagoo – finally moved back into its refurbished premises on Smeaton Close, Aylesbury, after it took 12 months for the unit to be habitable again.
More than 40 firefighters battled the blaze at the service garage on the Rabans Lane Industrial Estate last July after a car’s petrol tank ignited while Sanjay was working on it.
Sanjay, who got engaged to his fiance Nisha Varia last month, said: “The car had the wrong type of fuel in it and it just ignited while I was underneath it. The fire service said that these things just happen sometimes.
“I was actually set on fire, and all the hair on my arms and legs was burnt off. Luckily I was OK and just a bit sore for a few days afterwards.”
No one else was injured in the fire, but the business had to relocate to temporary premises in Griffin Lane while the insurance company dealt with the aftermath.
Sanjay, 25, said: “It was very stressful, working all day at Griffin Lane then going home to sort out paperwork after the fire.
“But so many people rallied round to help us, and I’d like to thank them and our customers for staying so loyal to us.”
The mechanic, of Bedgrove, Aylesbury, said of the reopening: “It feels a bit strange, but really good. They say there’s no place like home.”
GS Motors has been established for more than 35 years, after Sanjay’s grandfather Harbans Singh started it up.
