Lightning tore into a block of flats during a thunder storm this morning leaving the roof damaged and the building unsafe.

Four flats from the block in Cockton Road, off Bicester Road, Aylesbury had to be evacuated after the strike, shortly before 11am, with firefighters cordoning off the area while they assessed the structural damage.

Andrew Ruddick, who witnessed the hit from his offices, said: “It was quite an immense sound, a huge noise.

“I watched workmen enter and explore with a torch while there was a load of smoke coming from the building.”

Aylesbury Vale District Council is currently working with Catalyst Housing, which owns the building, to provide temporary accommodation for two people while a further person has yet to be contacted.

Another person is able to stay with family while the building is repaired.
