GRACE the field spaniel celebrated with breakfast in bed after winning Crufts at the weekend.

The five-year-old liver coloured bitch won a rosette for Best of Breed and the Bitch Challenge Certificate at the four-day show at the NEC in Birmingham.

Owner and breeder Gretel Osborn, from Fairford Leys, travelled to the show with Grace on Friday.

She said: “Grace travels well and really enjoys being shown. She went into the Open Bitch class for her breed and won that. All the first placings of the breed were then put together and she won Best of Breed.”

Grace had to walk around the ring and was examined by several judges.

Ms Osborn says Grace was well prepared for the show. “I run a dog trimming service, so I can make sure she looks good. But the exercise is the most important thing, field spaniels are gun dogs and they need lots of exercise to develop their muscles. She is also on a special diet. She was brilliant in the ring, she really loves it.”

Ms Osborn, who has two children, says Grace is very much part of the family and after her win on Friday the whole family had breakfast in bed on Saturday with Grace sitting in the middle of the bed.

“She also had some special biscuits and has been given a new bed of her own,” says Ms Osborn.

In 2009 one of her other dogs won Best Puppy; and in 1984 and 1988 she also won Best of Breed with two of her dogs.
