A new £2 million canal boat marina off Oakfield Road, Aylesbury, is close to completion – and The Bucks Herald has been given exclusive access.
Our photographer Derek Pelling was onboard the very first boat which travelled into the marina and his video can be watched above.
Around 30 barges a week use the Aylesbury arm of the Grand Union Canal, coming from Marsworth Junction.
The new marina will provide space for 40 moorings, including wet and dry docks.
The plans were put forward by Aylesbury Vale District Council so it could free up the existing facilities in the town centre to be utilised as part of the Waterside scheme.
Aylesbury Canal Society chairman Bryan Barnes admitted it would be difficult leaving Aylesbury Town Centre after so many years but that he was looking forward to the move.
He said: “It will be exciting once we get up to Circus Fields. We hope they will be the best club moorings in the country.
“If we get ‘plenty of rain’ to fill it up we should be up there in the first weeks of August.
“The general feeling is now positive. Aylesbury is not a very pleasant place to moor with the noise so people will be looking forward to get back in the peace and quiet again.”
The chairman said he was optimistic of enticing new members and added that it had contributed some money towards getting the facilities it wanted out of the move and that it would be in debt for a couple of years.
But he declined to reveal how much it had contributed as it was commercially sensitive information.
