Aylesbury High students hit the spot at national cooking finals

Year 12 pupils Olivia Spurrell and Claire Lewis were runners-up in the national finals of the Teflon Diamond Standard Awards.

The contest involved 270 students from 70 schools battle it out for what is a top accolade within the catering industry.

Olivia and Claire qualified for the final after winning the regional heats.

At the final celebrity chef Lesley Waters presented them with their regional champion certificates, national reserve champion certificates and Tiffany Crystal trophies.

Each team member also won a cash bursary, a set of cookware and bakeware featuring chef’s whites and other prizes.

Their school also won a cash prize and trophy.

Their High School teacherDenise Bevansaid: “I’m delighted that they are reserve champions, particularly since they were the youngest pair in the final.

“They worked really well as a team and their dishes tasted amazing.”

Lesley Waters said the standard in the competition was high.

“It is great news for the future of the professional catering sector in the UK that we have students of this calibre coming through the schools and embarking on careers in the industry.”
