A pensioner had a surprise last week while reading The Bucks Herald when she spotted a picture of herself in a swimsuit from 60 years ago.

Edna Blake (nee Williams) came third in the bathing beauty contest held by Aylesbury and District Swimming Club to celebrate the Queen’s Coronation in 1953.

The 78 year old, from Elm Farm, said: “I was 18 at the time and it was great fun quite honestly.”

Incredibly, Edna is still a member of the swimming club – indeed, she is now its president.

“I was about nine whenI started swimming. When I was 11 my friend and I were racing up and down the pool and this lady came up and said have you ever tried joining a swimming club?

“I said ‘no’ and she said, ‘well, you’ve just broken our club record.

“The pool back then was outdoors and jolly cold. But you survived.”
