A SUSPECTED shoplifter was dramatically rugby tackled down to the ground by a security guard in Aylesbury town centre on Wednesday afternoon.

The 28-year-old man, who allegedly stole items from Boots in Hale Leys, was chased by the guard near to The Bell pub in Market Square.

He had only made it to the entrance to the Great Western Street underpass before he was hauled to the ground.

The incident happened at around 2.15pm, with the square being busier than usual due to the strikes – indeed, it is understood that a group of children who had the day off school pointed out the man to the guard.

The man was left laying face-down until police arrived minutes later and arrested him on suspicion of theft.

An eyewitness to the incident said: “The guard started chasing a guy who was eating a sandwich which then went flying as he absolutely took him out with a thump.”
