Leading pet charity Blue Cross has released shocking new figures warning that the number of unwanted kittens, puppies and pregnant pets has reached ‘epidemic levels’.

The Blue Cross’ countrywide network of rehoming centres – like the one at Lewknor which is regularly featured in the Gazette’s Pets Need Places articles – is overwhelmed as numbers of pets disposed of reach a record high. The charity will be questioning whether we are still a nation of animal lovers while outlining how to tackle the crisis and prevent the increasing suffering of thousands of unwanted pets.
