Europe minister David Lidington says there will be ‘absolutely no compromise’ over Gibraltar’s sovereignty.
The Aylesbury MP is currently on holiday in Cornwall, but he has still been a key part of discussions in the wake of the border checks row with Spain.
He described the checks, which have caused major delays for tourists and residents, as ‘disproportionate’ and said what was happening was not in Spain’s interests.
Mr Lidington said he has been speaking with Gibraltar’s chief minister and his opposite number in Spain during the crisis.
He said: “As long as people in Gibraltar want to remain under British sovereignty that’s how it will be, and that includes the waters around Gibraltar.
“We have made our position very clear.
“Thousands of people have been massively inconvenienced by the border checks.”
The increased vehicle checks were brought in 12 days ago by Spanish authorities.
