Residents had to be evacuated from a care home after a fire broke out in Verwood Road, Aylesbury.

The fire at The Elms started in an upstairs flat’s lounge shortly after 5pm but no one was seriously injured

Four Bucks and Fire Rescue crews attended while one woman was also given treatment at the scene by South Central Ambulance Service.

Police assisted both services and staff in helping people from the building.

The majority of people were evacuated but not all as the centre operates a ‘stay put’ policy for some residents.

Smoke detectors went off and staff rang the emergency services. Police also closed off the road.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
