Bucks County Council officers have been shortlisted for an award for buying services.

The authority’s commercial services team are in the running for the 2014 national GO Awards as team of the year.

Their procurement practices have impressed the judges in the GO Public Procurement Awards - a mix of advising council teams on best purchase practice, closely managing tendering processes and suppliers, and keeping tabs on every purchase from order to delivery through a computer programme they designed themselves.

The team say it has saved more than £6 million through contract renegotiations, changes to commercial terms, and working with suppliers to get better deals.

Gillian Hibberd, strategic director for resources and business transformation, said: “With almost 70% of our spend outsourced to third parties, it takes a high performing commercial team to power it.

“And the shortlisting for this national award tells our residents we’re making their money go as far as we can in providing services.”

The news comes after the council was criticised in January over it’s procurement dealings with roads contractor Ringway Jacobs.

A damning report claimed that the county’s pothole-ridden roads are being ‘mismanaged’, despite £30 million a year being paid to the contractors.
