THE lives of a Thame couple were put at risk when their smoke alarm failed to go off after a fire broke out in their kitchen.
Firefighters found the couple in their bedroom following a call from a hairdresser who saw smoke coming from the flat behind the Cornmarket during the early hours of Saturday.

Station Officer Andy Ford said firefighters had to kick the door open as they could not rouse the couple from their sleep. He added that an oven and the remains of oven chips were found in the flat.

"It would appear that they had put the chips in the oven early in the morning and had returned to bed having had a late night, only to fall asleep again.

"Hopefully they have learned a very valuable lesson about the risks of attempting to cook after a night out. Cooking is one of the biggest causes of fires in the home."

The fire was extinguished and no one was injured.
