With a cast of 40, the Vale Gilbert and Sullivan Society will this week perform a modern version of the classic H.G Wells’ rags to riches novel The Story Of A Simple Soul.

The society has produced two shows a year since the 1960s and its latest offering features pupils from Tring School, Aylesbury’s High School and Sir Henry Floyd Grammar who play many of the principal characters.

Co-producer Jackie Farrow, 50, of Tring, who plays the battle axe Mrs Walsingham, said: “There is a core of performers and audience alike who stay true to the societies roots of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas but the committee is very aware that the appeal is limited.

“Therefore to ensure the society thrives and continues being able to perform at the theatre more well known family musicals have to be chosen. “The society has relatively recently performed Kiss Me Kate, Fiddler On The Roof, Oklahoma and The Music Man.

“The Musical Half a Sixpence was last performed in Tring by Tring Festival Company in 1988.

“It is a well loved and known family musical with popular songs such as Half A Sixpence and Hold It Flash Bang Wallop What A Picture to name but a few.

“This is the new Bill Kenwright version of 2007 which is set in the same era and has the same storyline.

“It gives some of the smaller principal roles a little more to do on stage and has a few catchy songs added.”

The show is being directed by charismatic hairdresser Neil Gurney, who is known for his infamous flower demonstrations as alter ego Dorothy and has been awarded an British Empire Medal from the Queen.

Half A Sixpence will be showing at the Court Theatre in Tring November from 21-24 from 8pm.

Tickets are £9-12 and can be bought from membership secretary Pat Rose on 01296 662745.
