This is the top end of Cambridge Street in 1961.
These shops stood opposite the Harrow pub and sold a variety of different things.
Jarvis’s on the far left had ambitions of becoming a major department store in the area. They had other shopfronts in the High Street and work would soon begin on a multi-storey building to the left of their Cambridge Street shop.
Eventually that block was extended into the High Street. It still exists today and is home to Costa Coffee.
The next shop in Cambridge Street is Mence Smith. This was a hardware shop with the smell of paraffin as you walked in. Next we come to Narbeths drapery shop. There were two of these in the vicinity.
The one seen here sold clothes and the other one further up the street sold material. Both shops also fronted onto the High Street. Times certainly have changed since this photograph was taken.
The arrival of the superstores killed off many of these small businesses.
