Call to arms to support canal walk
SUPPORTERS of the ongoing plans to restore the historic Wendover Arm canal have met to launch a sponsored walk to raise vital extra funds.
The aim is to raise more than £25,000 to buy essential materials needed for the six-mile section between Tring and Wendover.
Walkers, volunteers and organisers met at the canal near Drayton Beauchamp and the Bell Hotel in Aston Clinton on Friday to support the ambitious initiative.
Membership secretary for the trust, Katherine Deaney, said: “We can promise walkers a really great day out and a chance to raise funds for an amazing local amenity project for everyone.
“All the restoration work is done by our team of unpaid volunteers and we always need more funds to buy essential material and hire equipment needed to restore the canal.
“Fifty pounds buys 5ft of special lining to make the restored canal water tight and £100 buys and installs 50 concrete blocks to protect the canal bed. £150 hires and excavator for a day, and we can’t do the job without them.”
The walk, aptly named Walk An Arm’s Length, starts in Wendover and follows the towpath along the 215-year-old canal through some of the area’ most unspoilt countryside and a haven for wildlife.
Refreshments and toilets will be available along the route which will be marshalled by service personnel from RAF Halton and the Air Training Corps.
Free parking and a shuttle bus service will be available so walkers can park either in Wendover or Tring.
Walkers who want to take part in the event on Sunday September 2, can pick up a leaflet and registration form at: Wendover Community and Tourist Information Office in the Clock Tower, Wendover Library, Tring Tourist Information Centre, 99 Akeman Street and Tring Library.
You can also register to take part at Christopher Pallet Estate Agents in Wendover High Street and at Tring Beechwood Fine Foods, Frogmore Street.
There is also a Walk Hotline 07547 181857.
Registration is £10 per adult and children under 16 walk free but must be accompanied by an adult. Further information at www.wendoverarmwalk.org.uk
