Comment by Val Letheren over cycling incensed me

Your article last week in the Gazette 'Cycle path campaigners call for action' is excellent and reflects the concern of many in both Thame and Haddenham.
However I am incensed with the comment made by Val Letheren, cabinet member for transport at Bucks County Council (BCC).

The obvious reaction to her comment that there have been no accidents on this route is: 'So we have to wait for an accident before we can argue for a Haddenham - Thame cycleway'.

More importantly it should be appreciated by BCC that at present only experienced cyclists attempt to use this route. Indeed I had to discourage my children from cyling to school over 20 years ago because it was not safe. Today it is far less safe.

I ask BCC and Oxfordshire County Council to agree a plan for developing a safe route and they will gain many more cyclists.

Children cycling from Haddenham to school in Thame; commuters cycling from Thame to the station; Haddenham people cycling to work in Thame; and to the market and shops. Recreational cycling will also be made possible giving Haddenham the chance to use the excellent Sustrans Phoenix Trail and Thame to visit Haddenham.

Vast sums are being spent by BCC on promoting cycling in Aylesbury. Give us the safe route and Thame and Haddenham will do the necessary promotion for free.
